Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. It is bordered by the states of Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The state's capital is Annapolis and its largest city is Baltimore. Maryland has a total area of 12,407 square miles.
With the state's median household income of US$65,144 as of August 2007, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that Maryland is the wealthiest state in the country. Maryland has an estimated population of 5,615,727 as of 2006. Most of Maryland's population is concentrated in the central region of the state--the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. In 2005, the racial makeup of the state was 65.29% White, 30.16% African-American, 0.76% American Indian or Alaskan Native, 5.30% Asian and 0.13% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
Popular tourist destinations in the state include the Antietam Battlefield, Appalachian Trail, Assateague Island National Seashore, Catoctin Mountain Park, Chesapeake Bay, Deep Creek Lake, Great Falls and Patapsco Valley State Park.
Maryland is home to a number of institutions and agencies, including Johns Hopkins University, Human Genome Sciences, the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
